I shared a simple Japan booking timeline this week.

But the bigger question is: what should you actually book first?

Japan trips become expensive and restrictive when you book in the order things look exciting, rather than in the order they affect your route.

Here is the order I would follow once you have rough travel dates.

1. Create a rough route, not a perfect itinerary.
Decide the cities you want to visit and roughly how many nights each deserves. You do not need to plan every hour yet. You just need enough structure to know where a non-negotiable experience could fit.

2. Check your must-do tickets and lotteries.
Before buying non-refundable flights or locking in hotels, look up the official booking rules for anything you would be genuinely disappointed to miss. Some attractions, museums, theme parks, special cafés and seasonal experiences have fixed release dates, timed entry or lotteries.

For example: if the only available slot for your must-do Tokyo attraction is Wednesday, that should shape your Tokyo days before you decide exactly when to be in Kyoto.

3. Book flights and hard-to-replace stays.
Once you know the important fixed dates, book your flights, first and last night, special ryokan stay and accommodation in smaller destinations or popular periods. These are the bookings that are hardest to replace later.

4. Reserve the rest of your hotels with flexibility.
Choose refundable options where possible. You can improve the route later, but having a good room held in the right area is far better than having no good choices left.

5. Add priority meals and transport later.
Reserve the one or two restaurants that really matter to you. Then sort your Shinkansen seats once the route is settled and the relevant booking window opens. You do not need to reserve every meal or every train months in advance.

6. Leave departure-week logistics until last.
Your eSIM, payment setup, offline maps, insurance and packing are important, but they do not decide your itinerary. Deal with them once the route is protected.

Your 10-minute task today:

Open a note and add three columns:

  • Must book

  • Release or reminder date

  • Can wait

If something selling out would force you to change your route, city or dates, it belongs in the first column. Set a reminder for it now.

Travelling midweek or in low season? You may still find good availability later. This is not about panic-booking everything. It is about protecting the choices that matter most.
